What is a blog?

A blog is a website, or part of a website which is updated regularly. Many people use a blog as an online journal or diary of sorts. It is a place to share your opinions or knowledge. For our purposes we will say your blog is the place where your business shares its news, expertise or promotions. The word blog is actually short for weblog.

Oxford dictionary defines a blog as:

A regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

A business blog does not necessarily have to be labelled as “blog” and have a list of articles. You may want to have a “News” page with all your latest news, or an “Events” page with upcoming events or even some “how to” on fixing common minor issues that people call your business looking for advice with.

Why have a blog for your small business

Having a blog on your businesses website gives you a place to showcase your expertise. Sharing information with clients and becoming an authority on your subject not only makes you more appealing to your customers but also helps you to appear in the search results.

Having a blog on your website with your own articles gives you something to share on your social media profiles that brings clients and potential clients to your website. This can help you build a stronger following on the social media platforms and also gives you more brand awareness because people will see your links and go to your website to read your content. This also helps build trust between your client and your business.

Your businesses blog can be there 24/7 to talk on your behalf. When your business is closed your blog can represent you and allow clients and potential clients to get to know your business. You can also have a place for the blogs visitor to leave a comment or send an email to you so you can follow up with them when your open.
